PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Dry Mill Operator. A Dry Mill Operator convertsdry lumber into final products (stacks, de-stacks, cuts to size, grade, quality assures) in accordance with specific marketspecifications.
A qualified learner will be able to:
De-stack, trim, sort (pre-grade) and package lumber to specifications.
Move lumber and capture into finished goods warehouse.
Adhere to best operating practices.
Rationale:
Dry Mill Operator is one of the specialised skills within the lumber milling industry. During the development of a WoodProcessing Machine Operator qualification, stakeholders within the lumber milling industry motivated for a qualificationfor individuals who may wish to practice in the Dry Mill Operation as Dry Mill Operators. Stakeholders that participatedincluded amongst others, the following: Tirhani Skills for Africa, Concordia Training, representatives from Sawmilling SA,Bracken Timbers and Rance Timber, Skills Unlimited.
